Journal 6 - Ch. 13-15

My pick for this week's reading is hands down the work of Käthe Schmidt Kollwitz. The concept of expressionism is very interesting to me and appeals to me a lot. The idea of having your work depict certain emotions rather than highlighting the reality that is objective is to me, a successful piece of art.

Kollwitz' piece, "The Survivors Make War on War!" created in 1923, showcases the difficult conditions that the women and children experienced at the time. Kollwitz perfectly highlights the sadness and pain through the imagery of a woman wrapping her arms around her children and being surrounded by more children and individuals basking in sorrow and misery. Kollwitz' choice of color also helps to increase the feeling that viewer gets from the poster. As a graphic designer, this piece is very inspiring and teaches me that the right imagery paired with the right color scheme can set you up for a powerful piece of artwork.
